Combatting Climate Change
and Building Resilience
Our country has faced a terrible ordeal
following the La Soufrière eruption and
Hurricane Beryl. The impact has been
widespread and continues to affect
thousands across the country. We have
a plan to help those recovering and
mitigate the effects of disasters that
may strike in the future.
We will:
Spread economic opportunity around our
country, to ensure all have the opportunity to
to build stronger and more resilient housing.
Invest in hydroelectricity capacity and
solar energy, ensuring we have renewable,
diversified sources of energy.
Reduce landfill use through solid waste
management that converts waste into
renewable energy and reduces the size of
our landfills, and introducing recycling and
composting systems across the country.
Develop existing and create new marine
and terrestrial protected areas. The
Tobago Cays Marine Park, declared under
the NDP administration in 1997, is a landmark
site in our seascape and more resources
will be dedicated to its management
and preservation. In keeping with our
international commitments, we will declare
new marine and terrestrial protected areas.
Work will be done to support further the
preservation of Salt Whistle Bay.
Protect the St. Vincent Parrot and other
endemic species. Resources will be put
into the protection of all endemic and/or
endangered species. Our fauna and flora are
our natural heritage and endemic species
form part of our national identity. Saving
threatened species from extinction helps to
maintain the balance in the ecosystem in
which they play a vital role.
Establish eco-tourism and sustainable
livelihoods, with a tourism model that
integrates hotel development, the natural
environment, and community heritage. We
will build a robust and sustainable tourism
industry creating jobs that will positively
impact our environment and heritage.
Develop sustainable agricultural
production, by upgrading existing farms
to increase their crop yields through
sustainable land management for food
security.
Introduce sustainability into all schools
and re-introduce agricultural science into
secondary schools.
